I’ve got a few pea plants in my garden, which I might be lucky to get a few pods off – but alas, it won’t be nearly enough to satisfy the pea in the pod craving that hits me at this time each year. It’s just a bit too early to find them in the shops, and when they do appear, they’ve always been picked too young early in the season and too old later on; boo. My sister and I used to relish pea-picking expeditions with our mum just prior to Christmas each December. The one I remember going to most recently (which is still 10 years ago, mind) was out in Mangere near the airport; near where Villa Maria is. It’s no longer there of course, the NZ-Chinese market gardners and their old shack have disappeared.
If anyone knows a PYO peas place that still operates, please fill me in!
